Renewable Power Rebates

Although the NV Energy rebate window for photovoltaics (PV) has closed*, Southern Nevada residents can still pursue green energy generation through wind power.  Local codes are still evolving to encourage residential and large-scale wind power installations.  Use the In My Backyard (IMBY) tool to estimate how much power your property can produce with PV or wind turbines.  Then contact a licensed contractor for more information.   Be aware that there are local ordinances governing the installation of wind turbines.  For example, in the City of Las Vegas, “small wind energy systems” are only allowed in certain residential districts zoned R-A, R-E and R-D and up to 100kW.  Check out Wind Power Nevada for some more background on current state and local laws.

WindGenerations and HydroGenerations are still accepting applications.  NV Energy is also now accepting more options for wind generators.  See their website for a listing of accepted certifications.

*NV Energy’s SolarGenerations rebate program opened April 21, 2010 and exceeded capacity within six hours, and officially closed April 26.  They are currently reviewing applications to confirm eligibility.  Applications were accepted through Step 3 2012/2013. Check here for updates.

Reflecting on a Decade of Dedication - Melina Clark!

I have learned so much from her, including honesty, integrity, and hard work. Architecture is not an easy career, but it is worth it when you have meaningful projects.     My favorite project to date is the Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority (SNRHA) Wardelle Street Townhouse project. I genuinely enjoy working on affordable housing. There is a significant need for affordable housing in this Valley and across the United States. Wardelle Street Townhouses provide 57 units for families or individuals in need. These units have market-rate amenities, which help the tenants feel pride and care for their homes.     Wardelle Street Townhouses was my first ground-up project, which is incredibly exciting as a designer. The Business of Architecture: Staffing, Retention & Recruitment left to right: Mark Johnson, AIA; Anne Johnson, AIA; Greg Erny, FAIA; Angela Bigotti, AIA Last month, AIA Nevada hosted the Fellows Forum (in conjunction with SFx) to discuss an important topic today - Staffing, Retention & Recruitment. The panel included long-time AIA members Mark Johnson of H+K Architects, Anne Johnson of Sparkflight Studios, and Angela Bigotti of Van Wert Bigotti Architects, as well as AIA Fellow Greg Erny of architects + LLC.  Key takeaways from the discussion included: The challenge of recruiting and growing young talent from novice to competent practitioner. How to engage and grow with emerging professionals in the office and still maintain an efficient practice. A representative from Truckee Meadows Community College joined in the discussion, and shared how they are the first community college in the nation to offer an associate degree in architecture.
