Battle Born Academy. Image by Sparkflight Studios © All Rights Reserved. Here at Sparkflight, we design spaces of learning and play for children and families in need as part of our commitment to the community. Our joy is collaborating with educators to discover how the built environment can support their educational mission. We partner with developers who serve students that qualify for the  National School Lunch Program  and Title 1. Our services range from entitlements and pre-design to permitting and construction administration. We are available to advise charter founders and boards as they embark on the development process. Battle Born Academy Our most recent project is with Battle Born Academy, a school focused on project-based learning. Its founders strongly believe that all children can and will love school when strong academic supports are combined with student-led inquiry, a focus on social-emotional learning, and strong values that create a community of learners and ...

Sparkflight Studios believes in the power of public art.

Image
Marble Manor Enhancement Project (2009), Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority. Image by Sparkflight Studios, © All Rights Reserved. Sparkflight Studios believes in the power of public art. From our experiences, we know art to be a vehicle for uplifting the human spirit. Over the years, we have refined our approach, which tends to be four-fold, ranging from the "small" to the "extra-large": Small: attention to detail, materiality, and scale. Medium: the concinnity of the "small" elements.  Large: sensitivity to the social, environmental, historical, and cultural milieu. Extra-Large: holding the past, living the present, and projecting art for future generations. In the past, we've posted organizations such as Artolution and Forecast , to whom we look towards for trustworthy guidance when it comes to making powerful art and positive change in communities. For us too, community participation is important. For instance, in our Canal Convergence scul...

"Share the Promise" TONIGHT with Family Promise of Las Vegas!

Image
Tonight is Family Promise of Las Vegas' "Share the Promise" Facebook Live event! Come learn more about the mission of Family Promise of Las Vegas from 4 - 6 PM; at showtime, follow the link here . Family Promise of Las Vegas has been empowering homeless families to achieve sustainable independence for over 30 years. They do this through support, education, and providing a safe place to land while a family re-stabilizes.  Their families experience a 70%+ success rate with establishing a permanent residence.  As more families are on the brink of homelessness following layoffs and shut-downs from the pandemic, Family Promise’s successful model is especially relevant—and needed. We’ve been fortunate to partner with them for about 3 years while developing a new 12,300 square feet Family Navigation Center where families receive residential and support services all in one site.  Family Promise has received a significant grant from the County and gifted land.  And now, they...

Scottsdale Public Art

Image
This proposal is to create a sheltered gathering space by the water that offers a place for reflection on the interconnectedness of community. The form of the sculpture’s structure and skin are inspired by several associations from my desert experiences. The framework is literally tied to the water with a view, and metaphorically as people become the flow: a human network. Reflection is enhanced by written messages hanging within the shelter that are “good wishes” to be exchanged. Two rounded forms bypass each other creating an axial flow. The overlap creates a gathering space with dappled shadows by day, and uplit, sheltering walls by night. Simple seating is provided beside the forms.   Selected materials contain recycled content, are able to be repurposed and recycled, or biodegrade.

click to enlarge images It Becomes Her , Steel (2016) 7"h x 22"w x 8.5"d My intention for this piece is to evoke a female nature including generative, biological and botanical motifs such as seashells, ribs, branches, kelp, and curves.  Skin and structure create a layering and interplay between transparency and opacity...mystery and discovery…softness over strength.  Different aspects of the form are revealed when it is rotated into three different positions of equilibrium. Skin has primacy over the means of connection to the structure. Gaze , Wood (2016) 59"h x 24"w x 30"d Contained within an abstracted camera tripod, this piece toys with viewers' expectations of an objectifying gaze.  Seats are placed at each side of the "camera," and when participants interact with the sculpture they discover that they are also viewed.  Eyes meet for a brief, and potentially dangerous, intimate moment. ...

Artistic Vision by Fisherman's Wharf

Image
Last fall, I had a tourist's experience of one our projects.  Walking down Beach Street next to Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco, we spotted a bright red periscope peeking up over the tops of the local tchotchke shops.  Just around the corner, we were able to pop into the trendy Hotel Zephyr and their games courtyard.   A user-operated video camera mounted inside this periscope gives hotel guests 180 degree views of the waterfront and landmarks like Alcatraz. This fun and interactive art build project was designed with Blue Tree Enterprises , Wright Engineers , and Blaque Metal Works .  We're looking forward to teaming on more of these public art projects!

Murals Unfurled at RTC Mobility Training Center

Image
Over a year and a half of efforts by our design team are coming to fruition with over 9,000 square feet of installed graphic murals! Red Rock Mural © 2015 Anne Johnson AIA Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada ( RTC ) is currently expanding their Sunset Maintenance Facility, including a 14,700 square foot Mobility Training Center designed by Gensler Nevada and constructed by Sletten Construction of Nevada .  The new training center will teach RTC's paratransit clients to move more independently throughout the city.  The Center is designed to simulate a person's interaction with the outside environment.  Obstacles and views that a person navigating the city will frequently encounter are included such as bus stops, ramps, commercial buildings, residential complexes, and the beautiful surrounding mountain ranges. Our studio designed 25-feet high interior murals to create a city street effect and also simulate the views a transit rider would see acro...
