I AM A MEMBER OF AIA BECAUSE….I am a member because it is crucial to be part of an organization that binds together our design community and informs the public about what design professionals do. The AIA’s programs, educational opportunities, and exposure to other professionals in the field have been a benefit. I see AIA Las Vegas as valuable to both developing and established design professionals.

Biography: I am an architect, graphic artist, wife, and mother. The process of juggling these roles contributes to who I am and how our firm approaches architecture. We listen to our clients to learn what is important to them, and strive to balance sustainability, beauty, and function. In-house, mentoring and growing talent is a privilege. On a weekly basis, our office takes time to seek design inspiration.

I am an Arizona native and obtained my first degree at Arizona State University. After working for a time in Phoenix, we relocated to Columbus, Ohio for nine years, and I obtained my professional degree at Ohio State University. I had the experience of working in small, mid-sized and corporate practices and exposure to project types ranging from K-12 education, remodels of historic residential properties, hospital emergency wings, corporate/commercial, and higher education. The intensive working experience, diversity of project types and practice management styles equipped me to start a practice in Las Vegas when our family relocated for a job opportunity at UNLV. Concurrently, as an artistic outlet, I started a greeting card business that caters to state and national parks and retail consumers.

Here in the Las Vegas Valley after over eleven years, the architecture practice has evolved to include government clientele in addition to residential and commercial work. Implementation of sustainable practices and a graphic sensibility are foundational to our projects. Within these arenas, we have carved out a niche of top-notch service combined with artistic sensitivity and a reputation for meeting unique challenges.

Reflecting on a Decade of Dedication - Melina Clark!

by: Melina Clark "These past ten years at Sparkflight Studios (SFS) flew by.  SFS was my first architectural job, and I could not have asked for a more fantastic mentor than Anne. I have learned so much from her, including honesty, integrity, and hard work. Architecture is not an easy career, but it is worth it when you have meaningful projects.     My favorite project to date is the Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority (SNRHA) Wardelle Street Townhouse project. I genuinely enjoy working on affordable housing. There is a significant need for affordable housing in this Valley and across the United States. Wardelle Street Townhouses provide 57 units for families or individuals in need. These units have market-rate amenities, which help the tenants feel pride and care for their homes.     Wardelle Street Townhouses was my first ground-up project, which is incredibly exciting as a designer. AIA Nevada Fellows and SFx Event

The Business of Architecture: Staffing, Retention & Recruitment left to right: Mark Johnson, AIA; Anne Johnson, AIA; Greg Erny, FAIA; Angela Bigotti, AIA Last month, AIA Nevada hosted the Fellows Forum (in conjunction with SFx) to discuss an important topic today - Staffing, Retention & Recruitment. The panel included long-time AIA members Mark Johnson of H+K Architects, Anne Johnson of Sparkflight Studios, and Angela Bigotti of Van Wert Bigotti Architects, as well as AIA Fellow Greg Erny of architects + LLC.  Key takeaways from the discussion included: The challenge of recruiting and growing young talent from novice to competent practitioner. How to engage and grow with emerging professionals in the office and still maintain an efficient practice. A representative from Truckee Meadows Community College joined in the discussion, and shared how they are the first community college in the nation to offer an associate degree in architecture.
